Our editorial team
Three writers per state and territory cover the Australian home loan market — over 24 names with a combined 180+ years writing about property, finance and mortgages. Read each writer's beat, background and bylines on this site.
NSW
Harriet has been writing about Sydney property and finance since she left a Pitt Street agency in 2014. She covers the inner-west and lower-north shore patch for us, with side trips to the Central Coast and Newcastle when the data sends her north. Pre-writing she spent five years as a residential settlements clerk so she still reads contracts the slow careful way. Outside work she runs an embarrassing 5km loop most mornings and grows tomatoes that never quite ripen.
Marcus moved across to writing after a stint with a Western Sydney mortgage aggregator. His beat is refinancing, fixed-vs-variable, and the lender-pricing dance — the bread and butter for households trying to claw back a few hundred a month. He grew up in Liverpool and still has thoughts about the M5 corridor that no-one asked for.
Priya covers the first-home end of the NSW market — the FHB Choice grant noise, the LMI/genuine-savings traps, the regional vs metro deposit choices buyers wrestle with. She tutored maths at UNSW before pivoting into financial journalism and brings a teacher's patience to the explainers we publish. Lives in Strathfield, supports Easts.
VIC
Callum has covered Melbourne housing for over a decade — first at a suburban paper, then for a national property portal, then back to long-form analysis where it suits him. He chases the auction-clearance data every Saturday and has strong views on Box Hill, Pascoe Vale, and the great Footscray gentrification debate. He writes mostly the inner and middle-ring suburbs for us.
Jasper covers regional Victoria — Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, the Latrobe Valley, the Surf Coast retirees. He moved to Bendigo from inner-Melbourne in 2020 and now writes about exactly the journey he made and what it cost in stamp duty. His take on regional vs metro borrowing power is the most-read piece on our site three years running.
Yuki writes the investor end of Victoria's market and tracks the offset-vs-redraw debate like it's her job. (It is.) Before journalism she spent six years in commercial banking in Tokyo and Sydney; her dad ran a small renovation business in Brunswick so she's been around property since she could read a contract upside down. She edits her drafts twice — typos still get through.
QLD
Ellie covers South-East Queensland — Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and the Sea-Change Hervey Bay corridor. Pre-journalism she was a settlements officer with a Brisbane credit union, which is where she learned to read a 60-page loan offer and find the bit that mattered in two minutes. She writes most of our Queensland city pages and edits the rest.
Mei writes about Queensland's first-home buyer programs — the $30k grant, the stamp-duty exemption, and the bits of fine print that catch people out. She studied finance at UQ, did a year at a Big 4 audit team, and decided writing about money was more useful than counting it. Lives in Toowong, three cats.
Rohan moved to Brisbane from Melbourne for the climate and stayed for the maths. He covers refinancing patterns across South-East Queensland and the investor side — the bread-and-butter Logan/Ipswich rent yields and the Cairns/Townsville far-north angle. He plays cricket on weekends with one of the worst clubs in Greater Brisbane (his words).
WA
Darren writes regional WA — Bunbury, Geraldton, Karratha, Albany and the South-West retirees. He lives in Busselton, drives too far for a story, and won't apologise for it. Before writing he spent eight years in mortgage processing for a regional building society.
Sienna covers the FHB end of the WA market plus refinance trends across Perth metro. She was raised in Mandurah, moved to Perth for uni, and never left. She writes for borrowers who don't quite fit the metro template — single-parent families, dual-citizen households, regional buyers commuting in.
Tomasz has covered Perth property since the 2014 iron-ore boom faded. He writes the inner-Perth and Fremantle markets and chases the Pilbara FIFO-mortgage story whenever the data turns. Pre-writing he ran a mortgage broker outfit in Cottesloe for six years which is where he learned that the maths and the marketing rarely line up.
SA
Georgia covers the SA regional market — the Riverland, Murray Bridge, Whyalla, Mount Gambier and the Mid North. She's based in Port Lincoln, writes for buyers chasing distance and median prices that still start with a 3, and edits the SA FHB content.
Isobel covers Adelaide and the rest of South Australia. Pre-writing she was a settlements clerk for a Norwood credit union, which gives her a habit of reading the LMI line on every offer she sees. She writes the metro Adelaide suburbs and edits the regional pieces.
Nikhil writes the refinance and rate-comparison beat for SA. He grew up in Salisbury, did a finance degree at UniSA, and started writing about money after a couple of years in retail banking. He's got opinions about the dual-cab ute tax-write-off culture that he tries to keep out of his pieces.
TAS
Amelia writes the FHB and refinance beat for Tasmania. She moved from Geelong to Hobart in 2021 chasing the lower median and stayed for the writing community. She's good on the first-home grant fine print and edits her own typos lightly.
Fergus writes Tasmania top to bottom — Hobart's hot inner suburbs, Launceston's revival, Devonport and Burnie's value plays. Pre-writing he was a regional mortgage processor for an Hobart credit union. He owns one of those Battery Point cottages and won't tell you what he paid in 2017.
Leigh covers the investor and regional TAS markets — Devonport, Burnie, the West Coast, the East Coast holiday-let belt. Pre-writing he was a building inspector. He still rates a property by the roofline before the floorplan.
ACT
Anjali covers the FHB end of Canberra. She did a finance degree at ANU, worked two years in Treasury, and decided writing was the better fit. Her HBCS explainer is the most-read piece on the ACT side of the site.
Patrick writes the ACT suburb-by-suburb pieces — Belconnen, Tuggeranong, Gungahlin, Woden, the inner south. Grew up in Hughes, lives in Watson. Worked retail mortgages at a credit union before writing.
Samuel covers the ACT — Canberra's leasehold title quirks, the HBCS rebate, and the Public Service household-income leverage that shapes most of the lending in town. He's worked the ACT property beat for 12 years.
NT
Brendan writes from Alice Springs, covers the Centre and Katherine corridor, and brings a Territorian's nose for the housing that genuinely sells (versus the listings nobody buys). Pre-writing he worked in Indigenous community housing administration.
Kayla covers the NT — Darwin, Palmerston, Alice Springs, Katherine, and the smaller communities served by Top End brokers. Lived in Darwin since 2016 after a stint in Brisbane. Writes most of our NT content.
Natalia writes the FHB and refinance side of the NT — the BuildBonus, the THOD, the FreshStart layering. Moved from Adelaide to Darwin in 2022 and has been writing for us since 2023.
